An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device used to help in conjunction with CPR in those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It delivers an electric shock to the heart to stop this and to gain a normal rhythm hopefully. If this can be achieved in the first 2 minutes with CPR of that patient not breathing, you can give a patient an 80% change of coming back breathing, but without an AED that is rescue ready, you will only give that person 2-3%. Regular servicing of an AED is crucial to ensure it functions properly during a cardiac arrest, as neglect can lead to device failure and potentially fatal outcomes.

There is no legal requirement to own an AED in a company or Organisation, if you have one, there is a legal requirement to maintain the AED. First Aid Academy recommend if you can do this once a year, once every 2 years or after it been used in a cardiac arrest. However, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and the frequency of use, more frequent checks might be necessary. Regular servicing includes inspecting the battery, pads, and internal components, as well as updating the software.

Most AEDs have indicators that show the status of the battery and pads. There be a date on the battery and a sticker on the pad to let you know when they be due for replacement. However, as part of our service, we monitor these components and replace them before they expire to ensure your AED is always ready for use.
